4 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Eye-Opening (in a Finger-Wagging Sort of Way)   August 8, 2010
Michelle R Jones (Seattle, WA United States)
I have been plagued by various intestinal issues in the last year and since I was pretty stressed out for a while (job loss, financial issues, other personal upsets, etc.) I thought they may have been caused by this stress I was feeling. But after my life turned somewhat back to normal, I was finding that my issues weren't going away. Since a visit to a holistic doctor and/or nutritionist isn't covered by my insurance, I started turning to self-help books from the library to see if I could help alleviate these problems I was/am having.

The author has some great points in how to eliminate certain things from your diet to see if your body reacts to that certain item you are eating. She also mentions an extensive and awesome list of supplements (some I've never even heard of) that you can take to help ease digestive pain and upset, and I began adding some of these supplements to my daily regimen, while taking out some of these harmful foodstuffs I've been ingesting my entire life. To my astonishment, my issues began to alleviate themselves (although, they aren't completely gone, but I am still working on that!) Overall, I feel happier and healthier than I have in a long time.

As for the "finger-wagging" aspect of the book, it sometimes takes a "c'mon, have you been living under a rock?" tone, as least in my opinion. What I mean by this is she always uses the American diet as an example of why we as a nation are poorly nutritioned and highly diseased, yet I've been to several countries/regions where there is a comparable intake, as well as to countries where diets are more pure, yet people still suffer from similar ailments. She sometimes states the obvious, and then makes a remark with a tone like, "see? This is factual evidence, and, see, we doctors don't lie to you!"

Despite this tone, though, its not wholly in-your-face, and I found this book all the more informative and eye-opening as I turned each page. It has definitely changed the way that I think about nutrition, and I find myself making more conscious decisions when I am at the grocery store or dining out. The main point is, reading this book alone will not help you. Sure, it makes you more conscious of what you are doing, but you also have to take action with what you put in your body, even if this means giving up some things you love or that taste good to you in order to feel better overall.

4 out of 5 stars very helpful   May 4, 2010

This book is full of easy to follow, very helpful info. I ordered one for myself and one for my sister. Great for anyone to read and learn from, especially for dealing with specific digestive issues. I am always researching for more ways to improve my health, specifically IBS and Candida yeast infections. A great way to take charge of your own health, armed with excellent knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars great understanding   April 2, 2010

This book has alot of pertinent information that helps you understand what is going on in your body and why.
Since reading this book I have been able to understand why its so important to take certain supplements and what has caused the deficiency. If you are searching for answers as to why something is going on in your body you will certainly not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Restore your digestion and gut health!   November 30, 2009

Lipski's book DIGESTIVE WELLNESS, explains digestion exceptionally well for the lay person, and gives concrete, do-able directions for restoring digestive function for a host of gut problems. Maybe it ties it all together for me because I've already read a lot on the subject of digestion, but it does seem like this particular book really empowers the individual in restoring their own optimal gut function no matter what the originating cause.

If you were only going to get one book on the subject of digestion, DIGESTIVE WELLNESS should be the book. It covers both the specific 'diagnosed' gut issues as well as the non-specific. It gives the conventional tests as well as the 'functional medicine' tests that are often more informative. It suggests specific diet change recommendations and reasonable short-term supplement changes that aid healing for specific problems. My FNP saw my copy and will be ordering her own copy ASAP - (and yes, she has gut issues, too, that haven't been resolved by modern medicine).

Other very useful books on digestion are: Why Stomach Acid is Good for You: Natural Relief from Heartburn, Indigestion, Reflux and GERD by Jonathan Wright, MD, Healthy Digestion the Natural Way: Preventing and Healing Heartburn, Constipation, Gas, Diarrhea, Inflammatory Bowel and Gallbladder Diseases, Ulcers, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and More by D. Lindsey Berkson, Gut Solutions: Natural Solutions to Your Digestive Problems" by Brenda Watson, ND and Leonard Smith, MD. Each of these other books have excellent features, But if I could only buy one book, I'd start with Lipski's DIGESTIVE WELLNESS.
