Product Description
For many, losing weight is a never-ending struggle -- especially since our bodies are designed to keep weight on at all costs; it's a matter of survival. But a medical revolution is under way, showing us how to work with our bodies instead of against them to ignite the natural fat-burning furnaces that lie dormant within us. Drawing on the cutting-edge science of nutrigenomics -- how food talks to our genes -- Dr. Mark Hyman has created a way of losing weight by eating the right foods, which in turn sends the right messages to our bodies.

In this easy-to-follow eight-week plan based on each individual's unique genetic needs, Dr. Hyman explains how to customize your personal weight-loss program with menus, recipes, shopping lists, and recommendations for supplements and exercise. Ultimately, you will rebalance and stabilize your metabolism -- an UltraMetabolism -- to maintain weight loss and enjoy lifelong health.

4 out of 5 stars Missing the point   August 4, 2010

After reading about 50% of the reviews here, I think a lot of people are missing the point of this book. It isn't to lose weight. It's not a diet plan, fad or otherwise, and if you come to it with the sole intention of losing weight you may be disappointed. UltraMetabolism takes a wholistic view of, and provides a prescription for, a lifestyle that will lead to metabolic health. If your metabolism is off right now, reading and following this book will most likely help you lose weight, but only as a byproduct of achieving metabolic equilibrium. If it is not, then reading this book will simply provide you a different perspective on achieving metabolic health and may provide some good pointers that you didn't already know.

There's a lot that goes into the seemingly simple process of eating, digesting, and utilizing food and its nutrients. Dr. Hyman does an excellent (albeit sometimes too "horn-tooting") job of describing all of the stages, hormones, organs and systems, food, nutrients, external factors, etc., that have a hand in how your body metabolizes nutrients. He also discusses at length the various effects these processes have on your weight and overall health. He then provides analysis tools and prescriptive advice for how to modfiy your current diet and lifestyle to bring your body back into metabolic equilibrium and a healthier state of being.

You may not agree with his advice, although he does support many of his statements with scientific studies. You may find his diet recommendations too strict or expensive, although after following it for a few weeks you'll probably realize that the slight increase in cost to buy better ingredients is far less than all the money you were spending on bad lunches at work, starbucks in the morning, gelato in the afternoon, etc (my food budget has never been healthier). Also, those cravings that make it tough to stick to the meal plan early on? They go away pretty quickly too. But I think if you just come to this book with the right perspective and the correct understanding of what it is about, you'll have a much better experience with UltraMetabolism.

I think a good summary of the UltraMetabolism experience is this: Dr. Hyman clearly tells you that you can eat as much food as you want on his "diet." The trick is that if you follow his advice and achieve metabolic equilibrium, your body won't overeat. You'll feel full when you should, your brain will know what that means, and you'll stop eating. As a side effect, you'll have more energy, feel more relaxed, and have much better overall body health. Can that be so bad?

EDIT: After discussing this with my wife briefly, she made a good point. The title of the book is "The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss", so I can see why some people come to it thinking it's a diet book. Blame that on the marketers. Diet books sell better than healthy living books. But take it from me, this book is about so much more than losing weight. Like the title says, the weight loss you will see is "automatic" as a result of changing your lifestyle and achieving metabolic homeostasis.

3 out of 5 stars Good if you don't eat healthy now   July 13, 2010

I bought this book because I was eating natural foods, watching the calories and fat, and exercising and losing maybe one pound every three weeks. I went on the 3-week 'detox' diet and missed out on social occassions to follow my strict no-dariy, no-wheat, no-sugar, no-alcohol, no-red meat, no-caffeine (and I loved my morning tea) diet. I lost not one pound. A full third of the book is recipes, and pretty exotic ones at that. I had to drive 60 miles to get the ingredients. I guess my problem was not hidden food allergies because it made no difference whether I added milk to my cereal or soy. Now I'm back on a higher-protein plan and losing very slowly. Maybe this book works if whole foods are new to you, if you really do have a food allergy, if you have 100+ pounds to lose? I read somewhere to run from any plan that included 'detox' in it because once you go off, you regain the weight. I appreciate Dr. Hyman's efforts but they sure didn't do anything for me. I want my 3 weeks back!

This is an excellent dietary plan for those wanting to lose weight and move to a healthy eating style. Although not easy to do, this book gives you a very common sense plan to move to a new view of food and how nutrition plays in your life. Along the way you lose weight too!!!

This book provides a lot more details on the actual steps to take that Dr. Hyman discusses in the Ultraprevention. There are some great recipes. I found this book to be extremely helpful in adopting many of Dr. Hyman's recommendations.

Very informative and in some cases, suprising information. I am recommending this book to my friends. It was recommended to my by a nurse practitioner, who got the suggestion from a retired doctor, who is a patient. This is an Amazon verified review.
