Pain free and no meds in 6 days! March 26, 2010 D. Cossio (CA, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I suffer from rheumatoid arthritis and was diagnosed a year ago. I finally decided to look for alternative medacine when my doctor wanted to increase the dosage of my medacine and add another medacine even though I was feeling perfectly fine. I was taking methotrexate, predisone, and hydroxychloroquine. I read about this book and the mcdougal diet and checked it out from my local library. After starting a low fat veagan diet (mcdougal diet) and eliminating problem foods (conquering arthritis)I was pain free in six days!! I have now been on the diet for 27 days and am 98% pain free There are stil problem foods that i need to identify but i have not done the fast recommended in the book yet. I definitely recommend this book and look for it in your local library so you can try it without buying it. Also recommend the mcdougall diet lost 11 lbs in the 27 days so far went from 126 to 114 lbs!
The author has lumped all arthritic diseases into one big disorder October 23, 2009 LeaK (Colorado) 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
The author's personal story of overcoming "Reactive Arthritis" is truly endearing (you first learn of her diagnosis on page XXIV); however, she NEVER tells us what kind of arthritis she attempts to address in her book. Instead the author has appearently lumped all arthritic diseases into one big disorder to be treated in similar fashion. Reactive Arthritis is not the same as Rheumatoid Arthritis, and neither of those are the same as Osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid Arthritis is a systemic illnesses (auto immune disease) that affects not only the joints but the tissues and organs of the body. Osteoarthritis is a disease limited to the joints and NOT the tissues or organs of the body. Lastly, Reactive Arthritis, which the author states she has, is a joint disorder that has the following symptoms: (1) inflamed joints, (2) inflammation of the eyes, and (3) inflammation of the genital, urinary, or gastrointestinal systems. It is called "reactive arthritis" because it is believed to involve an immune response "reacting" to the presence of bacterial infections in the genital, urinary, or gastrointestinal systems. ([...]). These are three very different arthritic diseases having very different symptoms and pathology. Yet, the author seems to imply that her success with treating her own Reactive Arthritis through trial and error will work the same for someone suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis or Osteoarthritis. I don't mean to sound rude, as I admire her tenacity and success in overcoming her own disease, but she is not a doctor and the successful treatments and principles described in her book are limited to her personal experiences with Reactive Arthritis. I only wish she would have been more straight forward in disclosing this fact in the title or on the cover somewhere. I felt mislead.
She does provide some good information about healthy living, removing "toxins" from your food, and lists some websites and other resources for allergy testing and where to purchase certain products. To that end, her principles and advice are probably good to follow in general, regardless of your disease.
Great addition to any alternitive health library! July 4, 2009 Christine Richardson (USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
A good book on the subject, with lots of discussion on why Arthritis happens and how the medical profession is holding back the real cure.
One other very simple and good book WITH the cures IN the book is Arthritis: The Cure, and if you just want the cure, read it! You'll be typing, walking, running, etc before you know it!
Arthritis: The Cure: The Last Book You'Ll Ever Need On Arthritis
Enjoy!
We finally Feel Empowered! March 18, 2009 J. Langslet 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The only "cure" for my partner's RA, the doctors told us, are drugs with very serious side effects. And those drugs would only hold off the inevitable debilitating deformities. We decided that we had to take this into our own hands. I read many books on the subject that were helpful, but when I read Barbara Allen's book, I knew I had found the miracle that we were looking for. We both changed our diets and my partner got relief immediately. We are now awaiting the results from the Alcat blood test so we can further "tone" our diets and avoid inflamatory foods. If you too are feeling discouraged with what your doctor is telling you about RA, read this book. You will be glad you did!!
I'm Giving a Copy (2nd Edition) to My Rheumatologist February 7, 2009 Denise H. Williams, LMT (New York , NY) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The information is organized into a well-researched, easy-to-follow plan for getting well again and includes case histories of people with dramatic and lasting recoveries.
Ms. Allan writes from experience and so do I. At the core of the author's suggestions is the concept that food sensitivities may perpetuating your pain. I have help myself and guided many others by discovering the link between chronic pain and/or inflammation and food sensitivities.
In the 20+ years that I've been educating myself about safe and effective natural therapies for arthritis, I've never seen all of this pricelessly pain relieving advise collected into a single volume.
Bravo Ms. Allan!
GREEN TIP: First edition (2002, reprints 2005 and 2007) might be available at your local public library has a copy. But the 2nd edition important up-to-date information that can help short cut your process of healing.
If you or a loved-one have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis or any autoimmune disease then Barbara Allan's Conquering 2nd Edition is worth the purchase.
FYI:
I'm am a licensed massage therapist and karate instructor.
Sincerely Yours,
Denise H. Williams
