5 out of 5 stars The Sunfood Diet Success System   June 6, 2010

This was a great book. I have read a few books on raw food, but this one seems to contain all of the information needed on nutrition, a balanced raw diet, and the mental state of mind needed to attain your raw food goals and your other goals too! Excellent information!

This is my favorite book to date. I bought it thinking it was a huge recipe book - it's not. It covers so much that if you can only buy 1 book for nutritional advice and food combining, I would recommend this one. It really helped me figure out some issues I was having and how to address them (just by providing information that I can follow). I also was able to catch one of his seminars and was really impressed as to how knowledgeable this man really is - not to mention extremely inspiring.

I definitely became a David Wolfe fan after reading and practicing this book. I also enjoy books by the Boutenko family and love what Gabriel Cousens has to say!

One last thing.. there is some poetry by him that I wasn't really into, so I skipped those pages. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars My strength has gone up 50 %   February 2, 2010

This book is for anybody that wants to make the transition to a raw food diet. The first half of the book explains the reasons for going raw and giving up cooking and that is followed by example raw food preparations. The main reasons for going raw are for the dramatic increase in health and for adopting a subtainable way of live and the satisfaction that it brings. I am a 76 year old Australian male, taking no medications, that had been eating organically for about five years but was continuing to eat meat and cooking the vegetables. I made the transition to raw food 5 months ago. It has gone very well without any problems. I have been able to increase the weights at the Gym on five seperate occasions across all weight bearing exercise machines. I now pump more than my body weight on the horizontal leg press which has gone up to 185 kg an increase from 120 kg. My strength increase is due to the raw diet. So I thoughly recommend this book and the raw food diet. I think David Wolfe is the current outstanding expert in this field.

1 out of 5 stars A Diet that Virtually Ignores Protein   November 20, 2009

David Wolfe's Sunfood Triangle instructs readers to balance their diet by equal dry weight amounts of green vegetables, sweet fruits, and fat. In acknowledging that protein consumption has been overemphasized in our culture, Wolfe goes to the opposite extreme and deliberately ignores paying much attention to measuring healthy amounts of dietary protein. An analysis of a sample diet in his book shows it to contain 44% calories from fat, a rather high level. Of course, Wolfe has no use for measuring macronutrients according to the standard nutritional concept of percentage of calories from protein, fat, and carbohydrates, as this would detract from his "secret" Sunfood Triangle. However, from a nutritional science perspective, all that Wolfe has accomplished in inventing the Sunfood Triangle is to reinvent a three-sided wheel.

Ironically, by leaving protein out of his ideal equation for a balanced diet, Wolfe leaves his readers vulnerable to consuming too much protein! The problem is mainly due to the wide range of protein contained along with fat in a variety of nuts and seeds, from low-protein coconuts to high-protein peanuts. While a diet that includes fat from low-protein nuts like coconuts and pecans will keep one's diet around a safe level of 5-6% calories from protein, indiscriminately composing a third of your diet with high-protein nuts like peanuts, almonds, and cashews, will quickly and dangerously acidify your body with excessive protein, causing metabolic acidosis, and increasing calcium loss from bones and teeth. For example, 4 ounces of almonds with a large green salad and a few oranges is a meal that meets the balanced requirements of the Sunfood Triangle, yet, it contains 13% calories from protein, which nutrition authorities like T. Colin Campbell have associated with health problems. Wolfe's personal recommendation to help avoid these problems is to periodically "take a break from nuts." Is that the most precise method the author of this expensive new age book could come up with to properly balance a raw food diet? Gim'me a break. Better yet, gim'me my money back!
